What is it called when the batter gets to run to first on a wild pitch and the ball never is in fair territory?

I'm watching the Rockies Play the Phillies In Philadelphia. Bottom 4th, Chaucin pitching and Gload batting , 0-2 they call it a strike out, wild pitch. It hits off the glove of the catcher, the ump calls it fair and Gload gets to run. Catcher throws to first too late and gload makes first. But I am confused. Been watching Baseball for 50 years and thought I knew all the rules, but appaently I do not. What the heck is that?
