There's no sound coming from my laptop!?

i know computers so i immediatlely went to sound settings in control panel and its telling me there are no audio devices on my computer? this has never happed before as my laptop has built in speaker the whole thing just suddenly hapend? (also, the speaker symbol in task bar has dissapeard! i have XP btw please help? :(
