Why are my speakers not working?

I was one my computer the other day and all of a sudden my speakers quit working! I went to the control panel and went to sound then i checked and it says they are plugged in right and they are on and my computer is not on mute. idk why this is happening. could it be my actual speakers not working? should I try a different pair?
