Headphone jack doesn't work on my Sony Vaio.?

It runs on Windows XP. I have searched for solutions, but they all require going to Control Panel then clicking on "Hardware and Sound", which is not an option for me. I can find "Add Hardware" and "Sounds and Audio Devices". What should I do about this?
